We absolutely LOVED our stay at Shuttaford barn. Everything about it made us feel calm, relaxed and we instantly went into holiday mode.
The barn itself is beautiful – you can tell the owners are both architects! There is such incredible attention to detail and the furniture and finishes are just gorgeous (it’s actually more stunning than the pictures). It massively exceeded my expectations! It’s got all the amenities you could need and I was really impressed with the extra attention to detail for kids (babygate, highchair, even a little wicker basket filled with wooden toys). It’s located on a remote road – the only traffic we saw or heard pass was a heard of cows (which my two-year-old city boy found hilarious).
It was so peaceful and comfortable – we haven’t all slept so well in a long time. Francesca and Phil are brilliant hosts. They made sure we had everything we needed, and handily live right next door in the main farm house. However, the barn itself feels very private and they leave you to it unless you need something. The grounds are lovely and there was plenty of space for my toddler to run amok (in the buff actually!) and nice area to sit outside with a couple of gin and tonics too. It would have been easy to have spent the entire time at the barn, but we did also get out to enjoy the area too.
It’s a really great spot – the scenery around there is as good as Devon has to offer. It’s so easy to nip out for a walk on the moors, and just as easy for a trip to the beach. We had the best day at Mothecombe beach, which is only half an hour away. Despite being a scorcher of a day, it didn’t feel crowded at all – a bit of a hidden gem perhaps (thanks for the tip Francesca and Phil!). It also had a great cafe/restaurant.
We really didn’t want to leave and will certainly be coming back again soon for a week.
